Welcome to the Fold permanently steals a creature with mana value equal to or less than the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard — no returning it at end of turn, no strings attached. The payoff scales as the game goes long, and in any spell-heavy deck that fills a graveyard naturally, the threshold is easy to hit by mid-game.

Commander is where Welcome to the Fold does its best work, slotting into Izzet and Grixis spellslinger decks that stockpile the graveyard as a resource — commanders like Kess, Dissident Mage or Anhelo, the Painter let you recur or copy it while the graveyard count keeps climbing. In Pioneer and Modern it competes against faster, more efficient theft and removal, so it rarely makes the cut outside of dedicated spellslinger brews where the graveyard count is reliably high. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for a five-mana sorcery to matter. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander dynamic: if your oathbreaker fuels the graveyard, Welcome to the Fold punches well above its mana cost in the late game.

Price Context
Current price
$0.17 bulk tier
At $0.17, Welcome to the Fold is deep bulk — you're picking this out of a commons box, not tracking it on a buylist. Permanent theft effects at this price point don't hold upward pressure, so expect it to stay in this range indefinitely unless a breakout Commander deck drives sudden demand.
