Wargate puts any permanent with mana value X directly onto the battlefield — no hand, no casting, straight into play — and at X=0 it fetches any land untapped for three mana, making it a tutor and a ramp spell in one card. The cost is the color requirement: you need green, white, and blue sources, which limits it to Bant and four-plus-color builds, but in those shells Thrasios, Triton Hero // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful treats it as a flexible answer that scales from land-drop to game-winner.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Thrasios, Triton Hero // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful
Thrasios, Triton Hero // Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful runs Wargate as a tutor that scales: early it finds a land or a mana rock to fuel Thrasios activations, late it drops an Isochron Scepter or Devoted Druid directly into play to close the game.

Derevi, Empyrial Tactician
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician decks use Wargate to fetch permanent-based pillowfort and stax pieces — Static Orb, Seedborn Muse — straight onto the battlefield where Derevi's untap triggers immediately turn them into advantages.

Phelddagrif
Phelddagrif's group-hug shell runs Wargate as a flexible toolbox tutor that fetches whatever the table needs Phelddagrif to find next, from a Teferi's Protection to keep itself safe to an Aura Shards to manage threats.

Chulane, Teller of Tales
Chulane, Teller of Tales values Wargate as a way to cheat high-cost creatures directly into play, bypassing the cast trigger requirement entirely and freeing up mana to keep bouncing and replaying cheap creatures on the same turn.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Wargate lives — the singleton format rewards flexible tutors, and the ability to hit any permanent type at any mana value is exactly the kind of card that earns a slot in every Bant or four-color pile that can cast it. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially unplayed; three mana sorcery-speed tutors compete with Enlightened Tutor, Green Sun's Zenith, and Natural Order, all of which are faster or more format-warping. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if the signature spell synergizes with a permanent toolbox, but the format's compressed game length cuts into Wargate's scaling appeal. Pioneer, Standard, and Pauper don't have access, which is no loss — those formats neither need nor reward this kind of permanent-range tutoring.

Price Context
Current price
$3.78 cheap tier
At $3.78, Wargate sits in a comfortable spot for a niche tutor with real upside in the right builds. It sees enough Commander play in Bant and four-color shells to justify the price without being a staple you'll regret not picking up — grab it when you need it, not as a preemptive buy.
