Vindictive Vampire card art
Vindictive Vampire drains each opponent for 1 every time another creature you control dies — stack that trigger on a sacrifice loop and tables evaporate without combat. The cost is a clunky five mana for a 2/3, so it only earns its slot when Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder, or a similarly prolific sacrifice engine is already running the show.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder

44.4% of decks · synergy 0.42

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder floods the board with Thrull tokens on every creature cast, and Vindictive Vampire converts each sacrifice — or each token lost to Endrek's own clause — into a drain pulse that adds up fast across three opponents.

02
Teysa Karlov

Teysa Karlov

28.0% of decks · synergy 0.25

Teysa Karlov doubles death triggers, which means every creature dying under her command fires Vindictive Vampire twice, turning even a modest sacrifice outlet into a lethal life-drain clock.

03
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician

20.5% of decks · synergy 0.18

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician's activated ability proliferates and draws cards on a sacrifice loop, and Vindictive Vampire slots in as the damage payoff that converts each undying creature's second death into three points of drain spread across opponents.

04
Ayara, First of Locthwain

Ayara, First of Locthwain

15.4% of decks · synergy 0.13

Ayara, First of Locthwain already pings for 1 whenever a black creature enters — pair her with Vindictive Vampire and every sacrifice loop hits opponents twice, once on entry and once on death.

05
Massacre Girl

Massacre Girl

16.0% of decks · synergy 0.13

Massacre Girl's wither-and-sweep ability can chain through an entire board, and Vindictive Vampire turns each creature that dies in that cascade into a drain trigger, often closing the game before the sweep even resolves.

Vindictive Vampire is a Commander card through and through — its trigger only scales in a multiplayer environment where three opponents mean three life drains per death event. In competitive eternal formats like Legacy and Modern it's simply too slow and too fragile at five mana to see meaningful play, and no dedicated sacrifice shell there needs a 2/3 when faster, cheaper payoffs exist. Pioneer is legal but the same logic applies: the card demands a critical mass of death triggers that Pioneer sacrifice decks don't consistently provide. Commander is the one format that delivers the token engines, the undying loops, and the multi-opponent life totals that turn Vindictive Vampire from a marginal body into a quiet win condition.

Price Context

Current price

$0.33 bulk tier

At $0.33, Vindictive Vampire sits firmly in bulk territory, which is accurate — it's format-specific enough that casual demand keeps it cheap and competitive demand doesn't move the needle. It's a safe pickup for any sacrifice build without price risk, but don't expect the tag to climb.
