Chatterfang, Squirrel General card art
Chatterfang, Squirrel General doubles every token you make and then offers a Squirrel-sacrifice outlet to destroy any creature or planeswalker on the board — that's two separate engines on one card for three mana. It's the automatic include in any black-green token shell, and pairing it with Pitiless Plunderer or Hazel of the Rootbloom turns the sacrifice outlet into an infinite loop with almost no setup.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Hazel of the Rootbloom

Hazel of the Rootbloom

97.9% of decks · synergy 0.84

Hazel of the Rootbloom copies activated abilities, which means Chatterfang, Squirrel General's sacrifice outlet fires twice per activation — doubling the destruction and accelerating any loop that feeds tokens back into the engine.

02
Camellia, the Seedmiser

Camellia, the Seedmiser

88.7% of decks · synergy 0.75

Camellia, the Seedmiser draws a card every time you cast a spell that creates a Squirrel, so Chatterfang, Squirrel General's token-doubling effect turns every creature spell into a two-card cantrip engine that refuels the hand while flooding the board.

03
Ygra, Eater of All

Ygra, Eater of All

63.2% of decks · synergy 0.49

Ygra, Eater of All turns every creature that enters the battlefield into a food-generating event, and Chatterfang, Squirrel General doubles the token count on each of those triggers — the result is a rapidly scaling life-gain and sacrifice economy that's hard to race.

04
Ellie, Brick MasterJoel, Resolute Survivor

Ellie, Brick Master // Joel, Resolute Survivor

54.2% of decks · synergy 0.46

Ellie, Brick Master // Joel, Resolute Survivor rewards you for going wide with creature tokens, and Chatterfang, Squirrel General is the most efficient doubler available in those colors — the combination pushes board width past what most removal packages can answer.

05
Witherbloom, the Balancer

Witherbloom, the Balancer

58.5% of decks · synergy 0.45

Witherbloom, the Balancer generates value off life-loss events and creature deaths, and Chatterfang, Squirrel General's sacrifice outlet converts a Squirrel army into repeated removal while feeding every death trigger Witherbloom cares about.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is where Chatterfang, Squirrel General earns every cent — the format's longer games give token doublers time to compound, and the sacrifice outlet doubles as a removal spell that scales into a combo enabler. It's legal in Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them: three mana for a 3/3 with no immediate board impact doesn't clear the bar in formats where the game is often decided by turn three or four. Oathbreaker is the only non-Commander 60-card adjacent format where it could see fringe play, and only in a dedicated Squirrel or token shell.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

No single card replicates both halves of Chatterfang, Squirrel General — the token doubling and the sacrifice outlet live on the same body, which is exactly what makes it efficient. Doubling Season and Parallel Lives cover the first half at a higher price point, while Altar of Dementia or Phyrexian Altar can stand in as sacrifice outlets, but splitting the job across two cards costs you mana and a card slot compared to running Chatterfang.

Price Context

Current price

$5.70 mid tier

At $5.70, Chatterfang, Squirrel General sits at the high end of the mid tier but is cheap for what it does — a legendary creature that serves as both a combo piece and a removal engine in the most popular format. Given its near-universal inclusion rate in Squirrel and token-focused Commander decks, that price is unlikely to soften unless it sees a reprint.
