Verdant Succession
Enchantment
Whenever a green nontoken creature dies, that creature's controller may search their library for a card with the same name as that creature, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle.

Verdant Succession turns every green creature dying into a free tutor-and-deploy for another green creature of the same name — at five mana it's not fast, but the effect is categorically broken in token loops and sacrifice engines. Zask, Skittering Swarmlord is the poster commander for it, chaining Insect deaths into fresh copies while Zask's trigger keeps stacking value off each replacement.

Zask, Skittering Swarmlord
Zask, Skittering Swarmlord kills Insects constantly and rewards each one entering the battlefield, so Verdant Succession converts every death into a replacement Insect that immediately retriggers Zask — the two cards form a self-sustaining loop engine that requires almost no outside support to spiral out of control.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Verdant Succession is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its real home is Commander — the singleton format rewards its ability to chain identical creatures through a shared creature pool, and 100-card decks give you enough green creatures to make the replacement effect live. In Legacy and Vintage it's theoretically castable but five mana for a non-threat enchantment is unplayable in those formats without an immediate broken loop attached, and no such loop is competitive there. Oathbreaker can support it in the same way Commander does: a green signature spell or planeswalker that interacts with creature recursion makes Verdant Succession a legitimate engine piece. If you're running it, it's in Commander.
