Underworld Hermit enters tapped and immediately floods the board with Squirrels equal to your devotion to black — in a dedicated black deck, that's often six to ten bodies the turn it comes down. The cost is real: summoning sickness on both the Hermit and the tokens means a sweeper before your next turn erases everything, and Whisper, Blood Liturgist decks aside, you need a payoff waiting to make the patience worthwhile.

Commander is where Underworld Hermit belongs — black devotion shells with Erebos, Ayara, or a token payoff commander can reliably produce eight or more Squirrels, turning one card into a lethal board. In Legacy and Vintage it's theoretically legal but competes with faster, more resilient token producers and sees no meaningful play. Modern has the same problem: the tapped clause and one-turn delay are punishing in a format that punishes tap-out cards mercilessly. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if your planeswalker runs a black-heavy shell that can exploit the tokens immediately.
