Trap Essence counters a creature and slaps three +1/+1 counters on one of your own permanents — both halves on the same card for three mana. The cost is real: UUU makes it a near-mono-blue card in practice, and Surrak Dragonclaw is one of the few three-color homes that can reliably cast it.

Surrak Dragonclaw
Surrak Dragonclaw decks are already creature-forward and Temur-colored, so the UUU cost is achievable and the counter payoff goes directly on a threat — Trap Essence earns its slot here as both interaction and pressure.

Trap Essence is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the triple-blue cost walls it out of most competitive non-rotating formats where Counterspell and Force of Negation do the same job cheaper. In Commander, the calculation is different: the +1/+1 counter mode transforms what would be a vanilla counterspell into a tempo swing, and decks with a heavy blue base — particularly those caring about counters or creatures — can make the mana work. Outside Commander, treat it as a strictly casual card; there's no constructed context where UUU is a competitive ask for this effect.

Price data for Trap Essence isn't available in the current feed, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for a live number. Given that it's a narrow, triple-blue rare with limited competitive application, it's typically a bulk-rare pickup — worth grabbing cheaply if you have the right home for it.
