Trait Doctoring changes a permanent's subtype for one blue mana — cheap enough to be essentially free, and that low cost is exactly what Orvar, the All-Form needs to trigger its copy effect on any permanent you control. Outside of that specific engine, the effect is too narrow to justify a slot; Antler Skulkin exists as proof that very few decks are chasing subtype manipulation for its own sake.

Orvar, the All-Form
Trait Doctoring is in 44% of Orvar, the All-Form decks because a one-mana instant that targets your own permanent is the cleanest possible Orvar trigger — you pay one blue, copy whatever permanent you want, and the subtype change is almost irrelevant beside the free clone.

| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |

| oathbreaker | legal |
Trait Doctoring is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its competitive homes outside Commander are essentially nonexistent. In Commander it has one clear purpose: fueling Orvar, the All-Form, where targeting your own permanents cheaply is the entire point. In 60-card formats the effect has never found a real home — subtype swapping doesn't map onto any established combo or synergy package at competitive tables. Treat it as a Commander-only card with a highly specific address.

$0.28 bulk tier
At $0.28, Trait Doctoring is bulk — easy to acquire and not worth trading around. Its price reflects the narrow demand: it's an Orvar staple and almost nothing else, so don't expect that to change.
