Thrummingbird proliferates every permanent you control with counters the moment it connects — on a flying body that opponents have to respect or watch your board accelerate out of reach. Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, turning each attack into a two-counter swing across the board, and even in lower-power lists Medomai the Ageless style extra-turn strategies fold the card into an obvious include.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus doubles every proliferate trigger, so each Thrummingbird attack becomes two full rounds of counter growth across every permanent you control — it's the most efficient possible use of the card.

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres draws cards whenever you proliferate, turning each Thrummingbird attack into a free card draw on top of the counter spread.

Kros, Defense Contractor
Kros, Defense Contractor hands out +1/+1 counters to opponents as political currency, then Thrummingbird proliferates those same counters to keep allies loyal and the board under control.

Ezuri, Claw of Progress
Ezuri, Claw of Progress stockpiles experience counters and needs reliable proliferate to accelerate past the critical mass — Thrummingbird is one of the cheapest flying bodies that does exactly that turn after turn.

Toxrill, the Corrosive
Toxrill, the Corrosive loads up opponents' creatures with -1/-1 counters each upkeep, and Thrummingbird proliferates those counters mid-combat to finish off creatures that would otherwise survive Toxrill's slow grind.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Thrummingbird earns its slot — proliferate is at its most powerful when a single trigger touches planeswalkers, experience counters, charge counters, and creature counters simultaneously, and the 60-card formats rarely have enough going on at once to justify a 2/1 flier that doesn't attack well. In Pauper, Thrummingbird has seen fringe play in poison and counter-based shells precisely because proliferate is still efficient at common rarity, but the format's removal density makes a two-toughness creature a liability. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer all have faster, more impactful options for counter strategies, so Thrummingbird mostly stays on the bench outside Commander.

$0.33 bulk tier
At $0.33, Thrummingbird is pure bulk — 91% Commander inclusion in Tekuthal lists has not moved the needle, and it's unlikely to given how many printings the card has accumulated. Pick it up without a second thought; there's no meaningful price floor to protect.
