Thrull Wizard lets you pay BB to counter a target activated ability — a narrow but surgically precise effect that answers Phage the Untouchable triggers, planeswalker ultimates, and sacrifice outlets before they resolve. The cost is real: you need two black mana open at instant speed, and the card does nothing against spells.

Phage the Untouchable
Phage the Untouchable can only enter safely through specific blink or reanimate setups, and a single uncountered ability that puts her into play from the wrong zone ends the game for her controller — Thrull Wizard sitting on the board makes opponents think twice before activating anything that triggers her kill condition.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Thrull Wizard fills a niche nobody else fills: hard countermagic for activated abilities at instant speed, which Stifle effects usually handle but only once. Legacy and Vintage have access to Stifle and Trickbind, which are strictly narrower in different ways but cost less mana and see vastly more play, so Thrull Wizard doesn't compete there. The formats where it's illegal — Modern, Pioneer, Standard, Pauper — are the formats where it would have had the most consistent targets anyway, which is a cruel twist. In Oathbreaker it functions identically to its Commander role: a reusable deterrent in any black shell that can keep mana up.

Price Context
Current price
$0.17 bulk tier
At $0.17, Thrull Wizard is deep bulk — a penny-bin card you pick up in a trade binder without thinking. Demand is too narrow and the supply too old for that price to move meaningfully in either direction.
