Sunforger turns any equipped creature into a repeatable instant tutor — pay three mana to re-equip Sunforger onto another of your creatures, triggering its unattach ability to find any red or white instant with converted mana cost four or less, then cast that instant for free. Suddenly your combat step doubles as a toolbox. The activation cost is real, but a single Chance for Glory or removal spell recouped makes it net positive, and in a Wyleth, Soul of Steel deck drawing cards off every swing, the pieces fall into place fast.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Wyleth, Soul of Steel
Wyleth, Soul of Steel draws cards proportional to the number of Auras and Equipment attached to him, so Sunforger slots in as both a card-draw trigger and a game-ending toolbox — he swings wide, refills hand, then cracks Sunforger at end of opponent's turn to answer any threat.

Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist // Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh
Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist can move Sunforger to any creature for free at the start of combat, which eliminates the equip cost entirely and lets Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh or any hasty attacker fire the activated ability the same turn Sunforger enters the battlefield.

Feather, the Redeemed
Feather, the Redeemed returns instants and sorceries that target your creatures to your hand, so Sunforger functions as a second tutor layer in a deck already built around cheap, targeted red and white instants — the overlap between what Feather wants and what Sunforger can find is near-total.
Kellan, the Fae-Blooded
Kellan, the Fae-Blooded fetches Auras and Equipment from the library when he deals combat damage, making Sunforger a natural hit off his trigger and setting up the toolbox before you've spent a single activation.

Firesong and Sunspeaker
Firesong and Sunspeaker gain life off white instants and deal damage off red ones, and Sunforger can fetch either on demand — every activation is a potential lifegain trigger, a damage ping, or both, which feeds directly into the life-gain-matters and burn loops the deck wants.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Sunforger lives — a 99-card singleton toolbox of red and white instants is exactly the environment that rewards a repeatable tutor stapled to an Equipment. In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but the three-mana activation is too slow against decks operating on turn one and two, and the payoff instants available don't justify the setup cost relative to more efficient tutors. Modern presents the same problem: the equip cost alone is a full turn of mana investment, and the format moves too fast for a value engine that asks you to attack before you can use it. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where Sunforger sees real play, since the smaller deck size concentrates your instant suite and the format's slower pace lets you actually activate it.

Current price
$4.56 cheap tier
At $4.56, Sunforger sits in the sweet spot where price is never the reason to leave it out of a Boros deck. It's been reprinted enough to stay affordable, and given its inclusion rate across multiple high-synergy commanders, that price is unlikely to move significantly in either direction.
