Smell Fear card art
Smell Fear proliferates and then forces a creature to fight — two meaningful effects stapled together at instant speed for two mana. In any deck running deathtouch creatures, it doubles as unconditional removal; Fynn, the Fangbearer decks treat it as a two-mana kill spell that also advances the poison clock.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Fynn, the Fangbearer

Fynn, the Fangbearer

64.6% of decks · synergy 0.59

Fynn, the Fangbearer turns every deathtouch creature into a poison delivery system, and Smell Fear lets one of those creatures trade up into any blocker while proliferating the poison counters already on an opponent — it's removal and a win-condition accelerant in one card.

02
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres

42.5% of decks · synergy 0.41

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres cares deeply about proliferate triggers, and Smell Fear delivers one on demand while also clearing a problem creature — that's a card that advances Ezuri's counter game plan while doubling as interaction.

03
Agent Frank Horrigan

Agent Frank Horrigan

28.5% of decks · synergy 0.27

Agent Frank Horrigan has deathtouch, so Smell Fear turns him into a fight-based removal spell while the proliferate ticks up any poison or -1/-1 counters already in play.

04
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

21.3% of decks · synergy 0.20

Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons generates Snake tokens whenever a creature gets -1/-1 counters, and Smell Fear's proliferate can spread those counters to new targets, triggering Hapatra repeatedly and flooding the board with bodies.

05
Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied

11.8% of decks · synergy 0.11

Sab-Sunen, Luxa Embodied runs a poison and counter-based game plan where each proliferate effect compounds quickly, and Smell Fear earns its slot by combining a free proliferate with a removal mode that clears blockers threatening to stall the strategy.

Smell Fear is at its best in Commander, where deathtouch creatures are common, the game goes long enough for poison counters to matter, and a two-mana instant that proliferates and removes a creature is simply efficient. In Pauper it's a legitimate removal option in green-based infect or -1/-1 counter shells, where the proliferate clause adds real value beyond just the fight. Legacy and Vintage give it legal status but those formats don't want a sorcery-speed-adjacent fight spell when faster interaction exists — it sees essentially no play there. Pioneer and Standard don't apply.

Pricing data for Smell Fear isn't currently available in this snapshot, so check Scryfall or your preferred retailer for a live number. Given its narrow-but-real niche in deathtouch and poison Commander decks, it tends to stay accessible — it's not a card that commands a premium outside of tournament demand it doesn't see.
