In Commander, Slay earns a slot almost automatically in black decks that expect green at the table, which is most tables — green is the most-played color in the format, and a three-mana instant that unconditionally destroys any creature in that color answers everything from Craterhoof Behemoth to Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. In Legacy and Vintage, Slay is too narrow and too slow; those formats demand removal that doesn't care about creature color. Modern is legal but the same problem applies — Leyline Binding and Terminate don't need a qualifier. Commander is where Slay actually lives.
