Sire of Stagnation punishes every land drop your opponents make — each one costs them two cards and gives you two, turning normal development into a resource hemorrhage. At six mana in blue-black, the cost is real, but any opponent who plays a land in the turns after it resolves has done your work for you.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Ulalek, Fused Atrocity
Ulalek, Fused Atrocity triggers off every Eldrazi cast, and Sire of Stagnation feeds the engine by stripping opponents of the cards they'd need to answer either threat — the two lock out the table in tandem.

Umbris, Fear Manifest
Umbris, Fear Manifest grows on exile triggers, and Sire of Stagnation stacks on top by bleeding opponents dry of the cards they need to stop that growth, making it one of the most consistent includes in the archetype.

Phenax, God of Deception
Phenax, God of Deception mills opponents' libraries, and Sire of Stagnation shrinks the hands that would otherwise respond — together they attack resources from two angles simultaneously.

Yarok, the Desecrated
Yarok, the Desecrated doubles every enters-the-battlefield trigger, which means Sire of Stagnation's landfall punishment fires twice per land drop, stripping four cards from an opponent instead of two.

Hashaton, Scarab's Fist
Hashaton, Scarab's Fist wants to be in the late game grinding out value, and Sire of Stagnation accelerates that by ensuring opponents can't rebuild their hands fast enough to keep pace.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Sire of Stagnation is built to live — three opponents each playing lands compounds the card-draw and exile pressure exponentially, and a single unanswered turn can swing the hand-size gap by six or more cards. In Legacy and Vintage it's a six-mana creature competing against formats that end games on turn one or two, so it's nearly unplayable there outside of dedicated reanimator shells. Modern and Pioneer are faster than Sire of Stagnation wants, and the lack of a direct impact on the board when it enters makes it a liability in those formats. Stick to Commander, where its passive punishment scales with the number of players and the longer game gives it time to matter.

Price Context
Current price
$1.25 cheap tier
At $1.25, Sire of Stagnation sits squarely in the bulk-rare tier — cheap enough to pick up without hesitation for any blue-black Commander build that can use it. That price reflects solid supply rather than low power, and it's unlikely to crater further given its consistent demand in Eldrazi and mill shells.
