Secrets of the Dead turns every spell you cast from the graveyard into a free card, which in the right deck means drawing multiple cards per turn cycle off a single three-mana enchantment. In Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer and any graveyard-cast shell, it's a staple — not a consideration.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer
Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer casts spells directly from the graveyard as his core engine, so Secrets of the Dead converts every discard-and-cast loop into raw card advantage — it's in 75% of Oskar builds for good reason.

Neerdiv, Devious Diver
Neerdiv, Devious Diver mills cards and then casts them from the graveyard, giving Secrets of the Dead a reliable trigger stream every turn without any additional setup.

Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy // Scion of Halaster
Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy // Scion of Halaster repeatedly casts instants and sorceries from the graveyard, and Secrets of the Dead tags each one for a draw, turning Gale's recursion ability into a card-advantage engine.
Norman Osborn
Norman Osborn generates Goblin tokens and manipulates the graveyard, and Secrets of the Dead rewards the consistent graveyard-cast activity his shell produces with steady draw throughout the game.

Muldrotha, the Gravetide
Muldrotha, the Gravetide casts one permanent of each type from the graveyard each turn, and Secrets of the Dead draws a card for each of those casts — up to three free cards per turn cycle on a single enchantment.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Secrets of the Dead is a Commander card through and through — the format's longer games and graveyard-centric commanders give it the repeated triggers it needs to justify a slot. In Legacy and Vintage, graveyard strategies exist but move far too fast for a three-mana enchantment that does nothing on its own to matter. Modern has the same problem: the format's tempo demands mean Secrets of the Dead will sit on the battlefield drawing exactly zero cards until an opponent closes the game. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where it sees marginal play, since graveyard-cast planeswalker signatures can trigger it, but the card's true home is 100-card graveyard decks where the engine runs all game.

Price Context
Current price
$0.39 bulk tier
At $0.39, Secrets of the Dead is bulk by any measure, and given that it sees almost no competitive play outside Commander, that price is stable — there's no crossover demand pushing it up. Grab copies freely; this is not a card that disappears from dollar bins.
