Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer turns every discard outlet into a free cast, and the engine goes infinite the moment you pair him with a bounce loop — Shrieking Drake, discarded to itself repeatedly, will empty your hand onto the battlefield for nothing. The cost is a five-mana legend with no built-in protection, so he dies to the first removal spell if you don't have a response ready; that's the whole risk calculus, and it's a reasonable trade for what he does. Kamiz, Obscura Oculus decks run him as a value engine in the 99, but his true home is at the head of a dedicated self-discard list.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Kamiz, Obscura Oculus
Kamiz, Obscura Oculus triggers on connive, which is structured discard — Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer converts every nonland card pitched off a connive trigger into a free cast, turning the connive cost into pure upside rather than a resource loss.
Rona, Herald of Invasion
Rona, Herald of Invasion leans on repeated discard to power her untap ability, and Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer sits in the 99 to make sure those discarded nonlands come back as free casts rather than disappearing into exile.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer does his best work — the format's high density of powerful nonland cards makes every discard outlet a potential free spell, and a 100-card singleton list gives you enough fodder to keep the engine running. He's legal in Legacy and Vintage but sees essentially no play there; those formats have no patience for a five-mana creature with no immediate board impact when faster engines exist. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if you pair him with a discard-heavy signature spell, though the 60-card card pool compresses the engine somewhat.

$0.46 bulk tier
At $0.46, Oskar, Rubbish Reclaimer is deep bulk — you're getting a genuine combo engine for the cost of a sleeve. Bulk rare prices can erode further on reprint, but the specific demand from discard and graveyard builds should keep him from bottoming out entirely.
