Season of the Witch forces every creature that entered the battlefield under an opponent's control to attack — or gets destroyed at end of turn — turning passive board states into mandatory suicide runs. The cost is real: you take 2 damage per creature that doesn't attack, so it punishes you too, but in the right shell that's a rounding error compared to what it does to a stax or pillow-fort opponent.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Season of the Witch earns its slot — three or more opponents means the mandatory-attack clause hits multiple boards simultaneously, and the 2-damage-per-non-attacker clause rarely matters when your opponents are forced into mutually assured combat. In Legacy and Vintage, it's technically legal but has never found a competitive home; those formats move too fast for a three-mana enchantment that does nothing the turn it enters. Oathbreaker shares Commander's multiplayer math and could support Season of the Witch in the same forced-combat shells, though the smaller deck size and faster games narrow the window.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Bedlam is the closest budget stand-in — it removes all blocking and pushes combat in a similar direction, though it lacks the destroy-or-attack ultimatum that makes Season of the Witch so punishing. Curse of the Restless Dead and similar goad-adjacent effects can replicate pieces of the pressure for under a dollar, but nothing in that price range replicates the clean 'attack or die' text that Season of the Witch delivers.
Price Context
Current price
$22.55 premium tier
At $22.55, Season of the Witch sits in premium territory for a reserved-list enchantment with a narrow but dedicated audience. Reserved-list status caps supply permanently, so the price is unlikely to collapse — but it will also stay niche enough that casual players rarely need to prioritize it.
