Ragged Veins enchants a creature and deals damage to that creature's controller equal to any damage already being dealt to it — effectively doubling up pain on whoever you target. It costs one black mana, which makes it a throwaway price for a combat trick or combo enabler, but outside dedicated damage-doubling or group slug strategies it rarely justifies the slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Ragged Veins has its only real home, specifically in group slug decks that want to pile damage triggers onto opponents or in Niv-Mizzet, Parun and Stuffy Doll-style builds that already deal incremental damage to creatures. In Legacy and Vintage it is technically legal but competes with efficient removal and combo pieces that do far more for one mana — it sees no play there. Pauper is the one competitive format where recursive damage effects occasionally matter, but Ragged Veins is too narrow to crack any established archetype. Treat it as a Commander-only card unless you are building around a very specific damage-redirection engine.

Price Context
Current price
$0.20 bulk tier
At $0.20, Ragged Veins sits firmly in bulk territory and is unlikely to move — the demand ceiling is narrow synergy decks with no crossover into higher-powered formats. Pick it up freely if the slot fits; there is no reason to pay above bulk price for it.
