Niv-Mizzet, Parun card art
Niv-Mizzet, Parun enters the battlefield drawing you a card and pinging a target for one damage every time you draw after that — staple Curiosity on it and the table dies on the spot. The six-pip casting cost is a real barrier, but the payoff is a self-contained, counterspell-proof engine that wins games the turn it connects with Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph or any aura that replaces draws with damage.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph

Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph

69.0% of decks · synergy 0.42

Ghyrson Starn, Kelermorph turns every one-damage ping into a three-damage ping, which means each draw step under Niv-Mizzet, Parun threatens to wipe the board and drain opponents simultaneously. The two together form one of the most efficient kill engines in Izzet — Niv provides the draw trigger, Ghyrson multiplies the damage.

02
Arjun, the Shifting Flame

Arjun, the Shifting Flame

69.0% of decks · synergy 0.42

Arjun, the Shifting Flame replaces your hand every time you cast a spell, generating a flood of draw triggers that feed directly into Niv-Mizzet, Parun's damage ability. A single spell in hand can chain into enough pings to close the game if Niv is already on the battlefield.

03
Niv-Mizzet, Visionary

Niv-Mizzet, Visionary

65.0% of decks · synergy 0.38

Niv-Mizzet, Visionary cares deeply about spells and draws, so Niv-Mizzet, Parun slots in as both a redundant win condition and an additional draw-damage body. Running two Niv-Mizzet variants means opponents need to answer both to safely develop their game plan.

04
Kediss, Emberclaw FamiliarMalcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator

Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar // Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator

63.7% of decks · synergy 0.36

Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator generates Treasure on each combat damage trigger, and pairing that shell with Niv-Mizzet, Parun adds a non-combat kill condition that doesn't need combat to connect. Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar copies any damage dealt to one opponent to all others, which means Niv's pings can close out the table in a single draw chain.

05
Brallin, Skyshark RiderShabraz, the Skyshark

Brallin, Skyshark Rider // Shabraz, the Skyshark

36.4% of decks · synergy 0.33

Brallin, Skyshark Rider pings each opponent whenever you discard a card and grows Shabraz, the Skyshark on every draw, so Niv-Mizzet, Parun's continuous draw engine feeds both halves of the partnership at once. The three-piece combination threatens lethal through damage and combat in the same turn.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Niv-Mizzet, Parun lives — the singleton format gives it a clear role as either a combo commander or a powerful value piece in the 99 of any Izzet or five-color deck. In Legacy and Vintage, six mana is too much for formats defined by one- and two-mana interaction, and far better blue-red options exist at lower costs. Modern and Pioneer are similarly hostile to a six-mana creature with no protection beyond being uncounterable — the casting restriction matters less when opponents can simply answer it with a Teferi's Puzzle Box or Fatal Push the turn after. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where Niv-Mizzet, Parun occasionally sees play, since the 20-life total makes its damage triggers lethal much faster.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind fills most of the same role for roughly half the price — the draw-damage trigger is identical, the cost is easier to cast, and the trade-off is a smaller body and a casting cost that can be countered. If the combo ceiling is the draw, Niv-Mizzet, Parun is strictly better because its uncounterable clause protects the most important moment; if you just want the Curiosity loop in a budget shell, the Firemind gets you there.

Price Context

Current price

$6.13 mid tier

At $6.13, Niv-Mizzet, Parun sits in mid-tier pricing — expensive enough to feel like a deliberate inclusion, cheap enough that cutting it for budget reasons is hard to justify. It holds that price because the combo demand and Commander popularity keep a steady floor under it.
