Purity turns every source of damage you would take into life gain instead — as long as it's on the battlefield, combat damage, burn spells, and even Aetherflux Reservoir activations all pad your total rather than shrink it. Six mana is a real ask, but the effect is so warping that opponents often have to answer it before doing anything else.

Commander is where Purity actually gets to live — six mana is reachable in a multiplayer game, and the effect is uniquely backbreaking against the burn, chip damage, and combo kill conditions that dominate the format. In Legacy and Vintage it's a curiosity at best; the format speed means you're either dead or winning before you untap with a six-drop enchantment, and neither format is starved for life-gain tools. Oathbreaker sits closer to Commander in pace, so Purity is at least castable there, though the 20-life starting total makes it less necessary.
