Oviya, Automech Artisan enters with a pile of +1/+1 counters already in motion and immediately starts converting them into artifacts or creatures, so the board impact is front-loaded rather than conditional. The cost is real — she needs other counter-producers to hit full speed — but Great Oak Guardian and similar pump effects mean that condition is trivially easy to meet in the decks that want her. Balthier and Fran is currently the most popular home, and the synergy number makes clear this isn't coincidence.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Balthier and Fran
Balthier and Fran is built to reward artifact and creature production, and Oviya, Automech Artisan delivers both — her token-generating ability feeds directly into the equipment and party synergies that make the deck function. At an 84% inclusion rate, she's effectively a staple in that shell.

Aloy, Savior of Meridian
Aloy, Savior of Meridian cares about Machines and +1/+1 counters, and Oviya, Automech Artisan sits at the intersection of both — she generates artifact creature tokens while distributing counters, which means she's doing double duty for Aloy's payoffs on every activation.

Samut, the Driving Force
Samut, the Driving Force leans on creature density and power-boosting effects, and Oviya, Automech Artisan's counter generation feeds into the aggressive curve Samut wants — the tokens she produces are additional bodies to swing with or sacrifice for additional value.

Dionus, Elvish Archdruid
Dionus, Elvish Archdruid cares about big green creatures and mana multiplication, and Oviya, Automech Artisan's ability to create large tokens gives that archetype a reliable secondary threat that doesn't require cards in hand.

Kona, Rescue Beastie
Kona, Rescue Beastie rewards bouncing and recurring creatures, and Oviya, Automech Artisan is a repeatable value engine that gets stronger each time she re-enters — flickering or replaying her in the Kona shell means the counter math compounds fast.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Oviya, Automech Artisan actually lives — the longer games and creature-heavy tables give her counter engine enough time to generate meaningful advantage, and the artifact-creature tokens she produces are relevant in combat and as sacrifice fodder. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, she's legal but doesn't have a home: three mana for a 1/1 that requires setup isn't close to the efficiency bar those formats demand. Standard is the one 60-card context worth watching — if a dedicated counters or artifacts shell exists in the format, she could slot in — but she's not defining anything there now. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for obvious reasons. Oathbreaker is a reasonable secondary habitat given the faster clock and the ability to run her as the planeswalker's signature spell if the build calls for it.

$1.07 cheap tier
At $1.07, Oviya, Automech Artisan is firmly in impulse-buy territory — you're not making a financial commitment, you're just filling a slot. That price is likely stable given her inclusion in multiple popular Commander decks, but she's not a card you need to rush to acquire before demand moves it.
