In Commander, Overeager Apprentice fills a niche that black legitimately needs: a one-shot ritual to bridge the gap between a slow opener and a four- or five-mana bomb on turn three. It's not a staple in every black deck, but in storm, reanimator, and spellslinger shells it pulls real weight. Pauper is where the card sees its most competitive play — black rituals are a known quantity in that format, and a three-for-one mana burst at common rarity is exactly what storm and reanimator decks want at the price of a card. Legacy and Vintage have access to Dark Ritual and far more explosive options, so Overeager Apprentice doesn't compete there. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander's dynamics at a smaller scale, and the same reanimator and storm commanders that want it in EDH want it there too.
