Oran-Rief, the Vastwood card art
Oran-Rief, the Vastwood puts a +1/+1 counter on every green creature you play on the same turn — free, permanent, and stackable with anything that cares about counters. The cost is that it enters tapped and produces only colorless mana, which means decks with tight curves feel the drag; Chishiro, the Shattered Blade builds around the counter payoff so hard that the tempo loss barely registers.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade

65.4% of decks · synergy 0.60

Chishiro, the Shattered Blade triggers whenever a +1/+1 counter is placed on a creature, creating Spirit tokens — and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood turns every green creature entering the battlefield into a free trigger, compounding the token engine without spending a card.

02
Hazel of the Rootbloom

Hazel of the Rootbloom

69.0% of decks · synergy 0.59

Hazel of the Rootbloom copies activated abilities, which means any counter-doubling or counter-adding ability becomes two activations for one — Oran-Rief, the Vastwood feeds that engine by seeding the board with counters the moment green creatures land.

04
Shroofus Sproutsire

Shroofus Sproutsire

58.3% of decks · synergy 0.40

Shroofus Sproutsire cares about creatures with counters, and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood guarantees every green creature qualifies the instant it resolves — making the synergy less about a specific combo and more about consistent enablement across the whole game.

05
Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron

43.9% of decks · synergy 0.39

Agatha of the Vile Cauldron scales with creatures that have counters on them, and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood ensures the green pieces of the board arrive pre-loaded — a low-cost way to widen the battlefield Agatha, of the Vile Cauldron needs to convert into mana.

FormatVerdict

oathbreaker

Commander is where Oran-Rief, the Vastwood earns its slot — the 100-card singleton format is slow enough that an enters-tapped land rarely collapses a game plan, and counter-synergy commanders are numerous enough that the card has a clear home in a large slice of the meta. In Legacy and Vintage, the enters-tapped clause is close to disqualifying; those formats operate on mana efficiency so tight that colorless, tapped lands compete with fetch lands and dual lands for a slot, and the counter trigger rarely generates the tempo needed to justify the cost. Modern is the one non-rotating format where a green creature-heavy deck could theoretically use Oran-Rief, the Vastwood, but the card has never broken through there — Hardened Scales strategies exist and want the effect, but the tapped entry and colorless production mean dedicated counter payoffs almost always have better options. The card is absent from Pioneer and Standard entirely, and Pauper's common restriction rules it out.

Price Context

Current price

$0.69 bulk tier

At $0.69, Oran-Rief, the Vastwood sits firmly in bulk territory despite being a unique effect with no direct land-based reprint that matches it. The price is stable — it sees enough Commander demand to keep it from bottoming out, but broad enough supply that spikes are unlikely.
