Oran-Rief Hydra card art
Oran-Rief Hydra arrives as a 5/5 trample for six and then snowballs — every Forest that enters gives it two +1/+1 counters, which means land-heavy green shells turn it into a closer with almost no extra investment. Gargos, Vicious Watcher cuts its cost to two mana, and Xavier Sal, Infested Captain can't use it at all, but in the right shell this Hydra closes games on its own.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Gargos, Vicious Watcher

Gargos, Vicious Watcher

62.6% of decks · synergy 0.57

Gargos, Vicious Watcher reduces every Hydra spell by five generic mana, landing Oran-Rief Hydra for a single green — and then every fight trigger Gargos generates puts the Hydra in the red zone with a growing counter stack.

02

Polukranos Reborn

16.8% of decks · synergy 0.16

Polukranos Reborn is a Hydra commander that wants the tribe deep, and Oran-Rief Hydra fills the curve while rewarding the Forest-heavy mana bases that multicolor Hydra lists already run.

03
Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

20.6% of decks · synergy 0.15

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild turns every creature into a Forest, which means each creature entering the battlefield hands Oran-Rief Hydra two free +1/+1 counters — the counter accumulation becomes absurd within a few turns.

04
Azusa, Lost but Seeking

Azusa, Lost but Seeking

17.1% of decks · synergy 0.12

Azusa, Lost but Seeking exists to dump extra lands into play, and every one of those extra Forest drops translates directly into +1/+1 counters on Oran-Rief Hydra, making Azusa one of the cleanest shells for maximizing its trigger.

05
Yedora, Grave Gardener

Yedora, Grave Gardener

16.9% of decks · synergy 0.12

Yedora, Grave Gardener returns nontoken creatures to the battlefield as Forests, turning your graveyard into a counter engine — each Yedora trigger is a free two-counter pump on Oran-Rief Hydra.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Oran-Rief Hydra is a Commander card through and through — six mana is tolerable in a 40-life format with green ramp, and the land-drop trigger scales over a full game in ways a 60-card format never allows. In Modern and Pioneer it's simply too slow and too parasitic; you'd need a land-heavy synergy deck that doesn't exist competitively, and better six-drops crowd it out entirely. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason — those formats don't give Oran-Rief Hydra the time it needs to grow. Oathbreaker can work if your planeswalker strategy involves landfall or +1/+1 counters, but Commander remains the only format where it consistently earns its slot.

Price Context

Current price

$2.00 cheap tier

At $2.00, Oran-Rief Hydra sits at a fair price for a niche synergy card — you're not overpaying, but demand is narrow enough that it's unlikely to climb without a reprint or new Hydra commander spiking interest. Pick it up if the deck calls for it; there's no reason to speculate.
