Mystic Genesis counters a spell and drops an Ooze token onto the battlefield — the token's power and toughness equal the countered spell's converted mana cost, so stopping a Craterhoof Behemoth nets you a 11/11. Five mana is steep for a counterspell, but you're getting a threat stapled to the answer, and The Mimeoplasm decks treat every large Ooze as a future body to exploit.

The Mimeoplasm
The Mimeoplasm can enter as a copy of any creature in any graveyard while using another as a +1/+1 counter source — Mystic Genesis feeds that engine by generating an Ooze token that can itself become graveyard fodder or a counter pile, while also protecting The Mimeoplasm from opposing interaction on the stack.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Mystic Genesis is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it only sees real play in Commander. In competitive Constructed formats, five mana for a counterspell is disqualifying — Counterspell, Mana Drain, and Force of Will exist, and none of them cost five. Commander is the one format slow enough that Mystic Genesis earns its slot: games run long, threats are oversized, and a 7/7 Ooze token off a countered Blightsteel Colossus is a legitimate swing. Outside of blue-green goodstuff and graveyard-value piles, it still loses the seat to cheaper interaction.

$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Mystic Genesis sits firmly in bulk territory — buy a copy without thinking about it. Bulk rares rarely recover value unless they find a breakout Constructed home, and Mystic Genesis has no realistic path there, so treat it as a cheap Commander playable and nothing more.
