Molten Psyche card art
Molten Psyche clears every opponent's hand and deals damage equal to the cards they drew — at three mana, that's often a 10-to-20-damage swing in the late game. In Nekusar, the Mindrazer decks that have been forcing draws all game, this is frequently a one-sided finishing blow.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Nekusar, the Mindrazer

Nekusar, the Mindrazer

57.5% of decks · synergy 0.53

Nekusar, the Mindrazer punishes every card drawn, so Molten Psyche does double duty: it reloads opponents' hands to feed Nekusar's passive and then immediately burns each player for the full draw count as the spell resolves.

02
Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

40.0% of decks · synergy 0.39

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider generates Devil tokens whenever opponents draw extra cards, and Molten Psyche hands every opponent a fresh grip — that's a burst of tokens plus a damage payload stapled to a single spell.

03
Xyris, the Writhing Storm

Xyris, the Writhing Storm

33.5% of decks · synergy 0.31

Xyris, the Writhing Storm creates a Snake token for each card an opponent draws beyond their first, so Molten Psyche triggering off three opponents' full hands produces a board-flooding token swing on top of its direct damage.

04
The Locust God

The Locust God

23.0% of decks · synergy 0.22

The Locust God converts every card drawn into a hasty 1/1 flier, so Molten Psyche can produce a wide air force in one shot while also threatening lethal damage — the wheel and the payoff on one card.

05
Red Death, Shipwrecker

Red Death, Shipwrecker

15.5% of decks · synergy 0.14

Red Death, Shipwrecker cares about opponents discarding and drawing, and Molten Psyche's hand-swap creates discard triggers before loading opponents back up, fitting neatly into the discard-punishment engine.

oathbreaker

Molten Psyche is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its home is firmly Commander. In a four-player game the damage scales off three opponents' drawn hands simultaneously, which routinely reaches lethal range in wheel-heavy builds — something no 60-card format can replicate. In Legacy and Vintage the card sees essentially no play; three mana is too slow for those formats' combo and tempo demands, and the effect requires setup that those formats punish. Modern is the same story — the wheel payoff just isn't competitive when the format ends on turns three and four. Oathbreaker can support it in the right shell, but the 20-life starting total compresses the math and the format is less common overall.

Budget Alternatives

Cheaper options that do most of the same work

Runehorn Hellkite and Reforge the Soul both wheel the table for similar mana investment and cost well under $1, handling the hand-reset half of what Molten Psyche does. The trade-off is real, though: neither deals direct damage, so you lose the kill-shot potential that makes Molten Psyche a finisher rather than just a refuel spell.

Price Context

Current price

$5.41 mid tier

At $5.41, Molten Psyche sits in the mid tier — affordable enough to slot into any wheel deck without budget anxiety, but not a throwaway pickup. It's a single-printing staple with a dedicated niche, so the price reflects consistent demand from Nekusar and Xyris builders rather than speculative hype.
