Martial Impetus card art
Martial Impetus lands on a creature and immediately redirects it at an opponent's board while putting a +1/+1 counter on your creature each time the enchanted creature attacks — political pressure and free pumping in one card. At three mana, Killian, Decisive Mentor cuts that cost to one, making this one of the cleanest Aura includes in white-black.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Killian, Decisive Mentor

Killian, Decisive Mentor

77.7% of decks · synergy 0.73

Killian, Decisive Mentor reduces Martial Impetus to a single white mana, and the Aura synergizes directly with his +1/+1 counter payoffs — slap it on an opponent's best attacker, farm counters, and watch the table fight itself.

03
Eriette of the Charmed Apple

Eriette of the Charmed Apple

50.1% of decks · synergy 0.45

Eriette of the Charmed Apple taxes opponents for each Aura you control on their creatures, so Martial Impetus pulls double duty — it's both a threat-redirect and a passive life drain engine attached to the same enchantment.

04
Mazzy, Truesword Paladin

Mazzy, Truesword Paladin

32.8% of decks · synergy 0.32

Mazzy, Truesword Paladin returns Auras from the graveyard to hand when enchanted creatures die, so Martial Impetus becomes a recyclable piece of political disruption that keeps coming back whenever combat goes sideways.

05
Breena, the Demagogue

Breena, the Demagogue

22.8% of decks · synergy 0.18

Breena, the Demagogue rewards you with +1/+1 counters whenever a player other than her controller is attacked, and Martial Impetus reliably manufactures exactly those attacks — every trigger Breena misses, Impetus can manufacture.

Martial Impetus is a Commander card through and through — the political dimension of redirecting attacks only matters when there are three or more players making independent combat decisions. In Pauper it's technically legal and there are Aura-based strategies that could use the counter generation, but the three-mana investment for an effect that doesn't interact with the format's linear aggro or combo matchups makes it a fringe pick at best. Vintage and Legacy have no meaningful shells for it. Commander is the format where Martial Impetus earns its slot, specifically in white-black or white-green Aura strategies where the goad effect doubles as a political tool and the counter rider accrues real value over a long game.

Price Context

Current price

$0.31 bulk tier

At $0.31, Martial Impetus is deep bulk — you can pick up a copy for under a quarter in most binder trades without a second thought. It's a staple in several popular commanders and sees enough play that it's unlikely to crater further, but there's no meaningful upside here either; this is a pure utility include at a throwaway price.
