The cost is real — you're burning your own mana base — so it only earns a slot when the combo payoff is worth the self-destruction.

Lithatog is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and realistically only matters in Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, a two-mana 1/2 that requires sacrificing resources to grow has never been competitive enough to see meaningful play. Commander is where Lithatog finds its niche: sacrifice-themed decks and artifact-land loops can set up one-shot kills by feeding it a critical mass of permanents, and the redundancy of 99-card decks makes assembling that stack feasible. Oathbreaker shares Commander's singleton structure, but the smaller life totals and faster pace make the setup window tighter.
