Liege of the Tangle
Creature — Elemental
Trample
Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, you may choose any number of target lands you control and put an awakening counter on each of them. Each of those lands is an 8/8 green Elemental creature for as long as it has an awakening counter on it. They're still lands.

Liege of the Tangle turns every land you control into an 8/8 Elemental — on a board with ten lands, that's 80 power of threats generated the moment it attacks. The cost is real: eight mana to cast, and the lands only awaken after a successful attack trigger, so it folds to removal before combat and does nothing the turn it enters. Jyoti, Moag Ancient decks are the natural home because the Forest tokens it generates feed directly into the awakening count.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Jyoti, Moag Ancient
Jyoti, Moag Ancient creates Forest tokens whenever you cast spells, and Liege of the Tangle treats every one of those tokens as a future 8/8 — the token generation from Jyoti scales the payoff faster than any other commander in the format.

Jolrael, Voice of Zhalfir
Jolrael, Voice of Zhalfir rewards you for drawing cards with creature tokens, which means you're already building a wide board; Liege of the Tangle converts that token mass into an alternate angle of attack by awakening your actual lands as massive bodies alongside it.

Bumi, Unleashed
Bumi, Unleashed cares about having the most lands among opponents, and Liege of the Tangle punishes that land advantage by turning the entire stockpile into an army — the more Bumi's ramp pulls ahead, the more threatening the Liege's triggered attack becomes.

Yedora, Grave Gardener
Yedora, Grave Gardener turns creatures dying into Forest lands, and Liege of the Tangle awakens Forests — so every creature Yedora recycles into a land is one more 8/8 waiting to come online when the Liege connects.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Liege of the Tangle is worth serious consideration — the longer game gives you time to hit eight mana, and the single attack trigger can create enough board presence to close out multiple opponents at once. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but irrelevant; eight mana for a threat that requires a combat step to do anything is nowhere near playable in formats where games end on turn two or three. Modern is the same story: Liege of the Tangle is too slow and too dependent on surviving to attack for any competitive shell. Treat it as a Commander-only card.

Price Context
Current price
$1.43 cheap tier
At $1.43, Liege of the Tangle sits in the bulk-rare range — cheap enough to pick up on a whim, and the price reflects its narrow playability rather than any hidden demand. It's stable at this tier; nothing about its use patterns suggests an upward push, so grab it now if the deck calls for it and don't expect to find it cheaper later.
