Immortal Coil card art
Immortal Coil turns your graveyard into a life total and makes an opponent lose the game the moment they empty it — the engine is genuinely threatening. The catch is that any deck running Fractured Identity can gift you the Coil back and kill you with your own card, which is why Blim, Comedic Genius is the natural home: you donate the Coil before it becomes your liability.

Blim, Comedic Genius exists to shove harmful permanents onto opponents, and Immortal Coil is one of the best curses in the format to donate — once an opponent controls it with a thin or empty graveyard, they're on a kill clock they can't easily escape.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Immortal Coil is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it only sees meaningful play in Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, a four-mana enchantment with a built-in self-destruct condition competes against formats that end games on turns one through three — the card never gets the setup time it needs. Modern is theoretically possible, but the same problem applies: the graveyard synergy is too slow and too fragile against dedicated hate. Commander is where Immortal Coil finds its niche because the longer game gives you time to fill a graveyard, and the multiplayer politics of donating it make the downside someone else's problem.

Price Context

Current price

$0.57 bulk tier

At $0.57, Immortal Coil is firmly bulk — a negligible entry cost for a card with a real combo ceiling. Bulk rares with narrow but devoted homes tend to stay cheap, so don't expect the price to move unless a high-profile Blim deck puts it on camera.
