Hellrider card art
Hellrider turns every attacking creature into a direct damage source, adding up fast enough to close games that a wide board alone couldn't finish. At four mana for a 3/3 with haste, the body is fine but the trigger is the reason — in any deck that regularly attacks with three or more creatures, Hellrider is a reliable finisher, and Zurzoth, Chaos Rider lists run it in over 83% of builds for exactly that reason.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

83.1% of decks · synergy 0.81

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider floods the board with Devil tokens every time opponents draw their first card each turn, and Hellrider converts that critical mass into lethal damage the moment the attack step begins — it's the cleanest finisher in the archetype.

02
Raphael, Fiendish Savior

Raphael, Fiendish Savior

50.7% of decks · synergy 0.49

Raphael, Fiendish Savior builds a wide Demon, Devil, and Vampire board and grants them all lifelink; Hellrider layers direct damage on top of the lifelink triggers, swinging both life totals in your favor simultaneously.

03
Mishra, Claimed by Gix

Mishra, Claimed by Gix

31.3% of decks · synergy 0.30

Mishra, Claimed by Gix rewards attacking with multiple creatures, and Hellrider stacks pre-combat damage alongside Mishra's drain trigger — opponents taking hits from both sources on the same turn run out of life quickly.

04
Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

23.3% of decks · synergy 0.21

Isshin, Two Heavens as One doubles attack triggers, so every attacker under Hellrider deals two damage to opponents instead of one — a board of six creatures becomes 12 damage before blockers are even declared.

05
Wulfgar of Icewind Dale

Wulfgar of Icewind Dale

19.4% of decks · synergy 0.19

Wulfgar of Icewind Dale also doubles attack triggers, giving Hellrider the same explosive math as Isshin — the difference is Wulfgar's Gruul shell typically runs bigger individual threats, making each doubled ping hit harder when the board is smaller.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

oathbreaker

Commander is where Hellrider does its best work — three opponents means three damage per attacker per swing, and a board of five creatures already threatens 15 damage before combat resolves. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but essentially invisible; four mana is too slow for those formats and the effect doesn't match the efficiency those environments demand. Modern has faster, more resilient four-drops that close games without needing a wide board already in place, so Hellrider sees fringe play at best there. In Oathbreaker the compressed game speed and lower life totals make it viable in aggro builds, but it's still a Commander card at heart.

Price Context

Current price

$0.54 bulk tier

At $0.54, Hellrider is bulk — easy to pick up in trade binders or as a throw-in with any order. The price reflects wide reprint availability rather than low demand; it's a genuine staple in aggressive Commander decks and that floor is unlikely to drop further.
