God-Eternal Bontu enters and immediately demands a sacrifice of your entire board, drawing a card for each permanent sacrificed — that's a mass-loot engine stapled to a 5/6 menace that shuffles back into your library when it dies. The cost is real: five mana and a board state you're willing to cash in, which makes it better alongside token producers like Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder than in decks that need their permanents to stick, and far more interesting than comparable bodies like Colossal Grave-Reaver that don't generate that kind of card advantage on entry.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder
Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder creates Thrull tokens every time you cast a creature, and God-Eternal Bontu turns that pile of tokens directly into cards — the pairing is almost self-explanatory. The synergy number (0.52) reflects exactly this: Endrek floods the board, Bontu cashes it in.

Hearthhull, the Worldseed
Hearthhull, the Worldseed generates a constant stream of token permanents that are designed to be spent, making God-Eternal Bontu's enter-the-battlefield sacrifice trigger a reliable draw engine rather than a painful tempo cost. At 41% inclusion across Hearthhull decks, Bontu is practically a staple there.

Szarel, Genesis Shepherd
Szarel, Genesis Shepherd cares about death triggers and generating value from the graveyard, so God-Eternal Bontu's recursive shuffle clause keeps it in the game while the ETB loot refuels your hand. The sacrifice fodder Szarel naturally produces makes Bontu's entry cost trivial.

Gyome, Master Chef
Gyome, Master Chef produces Food tokens at a steady clip, and God-Eternal Bontu converts that artifact board into cards the moment it enters. Sacrificing Gyome's Foods to Bontu is pure upside — they weren't attacking anyway.

Ghoulcaller Gisa
Ghoulcaller Gisa makes Zombie tokens by sacrificing creatures, and God-Eternal Bontu turns that swelling Zombie army into a hand refill whenever you need to reset. The loop is straightforward: Gisa builds the board, Bontu cashes it in for cards and then comes back for more.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where God-Eternal Bontu belongs — the three-player threat assessment, multiplied token production, and late-game inevitability of the format make a recursive 5/6 that draws cards on entry genuinely dangerous. In Modern and Legacy it's simply too slow and too narrow; five mana for a single-target effect that doesn't close the game immediately doesn't compete with those formats' threats. Pioneer is legal but similarly inhospitable — midrange and control shells there want immediate board impact for that mana investment, and Bontu's value is front-loaded only when you already control a board. Oathbreaker, if your group plays it, is probably its second-best home, especially under a black sacrifice-oriented signature spell.
