Garruk, Cursed Huntsman lands on turn six and immediately threatens to run away with the game — two 2/2 wolves plus a loyalty-building minus means he can protect himself and still tick toward his emblem. The cost is real: six mana is a lot to ask, and he dies to any removal spell before you untap, but in a shell with The Chain Veil or Carth the Lion doubling his activations, the payoff is lopsided enough to justify the investment.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Carth the Lion
Carth the Lion is the definitive home — his passive gives Garruk, Cursed Huntsman an extra loyalty counter on every activation, letting you sprint toward the game-ending emblem in two turns instead of four while Carth's tutor effect finds him in the first place.

Hazel of the Rootbloom
Hazel of the Rootbloom cares about tokens and can copy activated abilities, so each Garruk, Cursed Huntsman wolf-making activation becomes a flood of bodies that Hazel can immediately leverage for counters and additional value.

Xavier Sal, Infested Captain
Xavier Sal, Infested Captain rewards you for making tokens with incubate triggers, and Garruk, Cursed Huntsman's steady stream of 2/2 wolves feeds that engine on every cycle around the table.

Chatterfang, Squirrel General
Chatterfang, Squirrel General copies every non-squirrel token you make, so each Garruk, Cursed Huntsman activation that spits out wolves also produces a free squirrel — doubling the board presence at no additional cost.

Agent Frank Horrigan
Agent Frank Horrigan's power scales off the number of creatures you control, and Garruk, Cursed Huntsman provides a recurring, hard-to-interact-with source of bodies that keeps Frank's stats climbing turn over turn.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Garruk, Cursed Huntsman actually lives — the format's slower clock gives him time to tick up, and multiplayer politics mean an emblem that buffs your whole team can close out three opponents at once. In competitive Commander he's too slow and too vulnerable, but in mid-power and token-focused builds he earns his slot. In Legacy and Vintage he's legal but essentially invisible; six-mana planeswalkers don't compete in formats where the game is often over by turn two or three. Pioneer is the same story — he's legal, but the format is too fast and the planeswalker competition too dense for a six-drop to see serious play. Oathbreaker is an interesting fringe case where he can serve as the signature spell target for a Carth-style value engine.

Current price
$2.08 cheap tier
At $2.08, Garruk, Cursed Huntsman sits in the rare-but-accessible tier — a six-mana mythic planeswalker for under three dollars is a genuine bargain, largely because his power level doesn't translate outside Commander. That price is unlikely to move much without a reprint or a breakout Carth the Lion finish pushing demand.
