Double strike

Efreet Flamepainter card art
Efreet Flamepainter cheats a free instant or sorcery cast every time it connects — no mana cost, straight from your graveyard — which means one hit can close a game or generate a loop. The cost is double strike on a fragile 1/3 body that has to actually deal combat damage, and Oriq Loremage tutoring a spell into your graveyard is the cleanest setup, not a workaround.

Commander is where Efreet Flamepainter belongs. The singleton graveyard is already full of targets, opponents have no hand information to play around, and one unblocked swing can replay a Chaos Warp, a Timetwister effect, or a lethal burn spell for free. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Legacy, Efreet Flamepainter is too slow and too fragile — a 1/3 double striker for four mana that requires combat damage to connect is nowhere near the rate those formats demand. Pioneer represents the same problem at a slightly lower power ceiling, but still nowhere near playable. Oathbreaker gives it a niche home when the signature spell is something broken enough to recur.

Price Context

Current price

$0.25 bulk tier

At $0.25, Efreet Flamepainter is bulk, and the price reflects its narrow competitive demand rather than its ceiling in the right Commander shell. It's unlikely to climb without a reprint-driven spike or a new graveyard-setup enabler pushing it into wider rotation, but at a quarter it's a zero-risk pickup for any spellslinger build.
