Edgar Markov puts a 1/1 Vampire token into play every time you cast a Vampire spell — before it even resolves — which means the board fills up faster than opponents can answer it. The six-mana cost is real, but Edgar rarely needs to stay in play to take over a game; the eminence trigger does the work from the command zone, and recursive threats like Oathsworn Vampire keep the pressure on even through board wipes.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |

| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Edgar Markov is truly at home — eminence was designed for the command zone, and tribal synergy scales directly with the 99-card pool of Vampires available in Mardu colors. In Legacy and Vintage he's technically legal but a six-mana creature with no immediate protection is nowhere near competitive in those formats. Oathbreaker doesn't support legendary creatures as commanders, so that legality is academic. Everywhere else, he simply isn't in the card pool.

unknown tier
Edgar Markov has historically been one of the more expensive Commander precon cards due to sustained demand from Vampire tribal players — check current listings on Scryfall or TCGPlayer for the live price, as it moves with reprint announcements. If a reprint appears in a new Commander product, that's the window to buy in; otherwise, expect to pay a premium for a card that sees consistent play.
