Dragon Shadow card art
Dragon Shadow gives a creature fear and, on any turn a creature with power 5 or greater enters your graveyard, returns itself from the graveyard to the battlefield attached to that creature — the recursion is free and automatic. The catch is that fear is nearly obsolete in a format full of artifact and black creatures, so Dragon Shadow lives or dies on the commanders that actually want evasion stapled to a self-replacing enchantment, most obviously Phage the Untouchable.

Phage the Untouchable

23.0% of decks · synergy 0.22

Phage the Untouchable wins the game on contact and loses it on an blocked swing, so Dragon Shadow's fear aura is a direct path to an unblockable kill — and when Phage inevitably hits the graveyard, Dragon Shadow jumps right back onto the next threat for free.

In Commander, Dragon Shadow earns its slot only in decks running high-power black threats where fear translates to genuine unblockability — the recursion clause is the real draw, since a one-mana aura that recycles itself every time a fatty dies is a card-neutral investment over a long game. In Pauper it's a legal one-mana aura in a format where fear still blocks most creatures, but evasion-aura strategies are too fragile to see real play. Legacy and Vintage have it legal but ignore it entirely — the effect is too slow and too conditional to compete. Dragon Shadow is a Commander-only card in practice, and even there it belongs in a narrow tier of decks.

Price Context

Current price

$0.17 bulk tier

At $0.17, Dragon Shadow is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a box rather than order. Demand is narrow enough that the price has no upward pressure, and it should stay at this floor indefinitely.
