Curator's Ward card art
Curator's Ward puts hexproof on any legendary permanent or enchantment for two mana, and replaces itself with two cards when that permanent dies — making it both protection and insurance in one card. The cost is that it does nothing without a suitable target, so it's dead in hand against creature-light boards; Eriette, the Beguiler and similar enchantment commanders make that condition trivially easy to meet.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Eriette, the Beguiler

Eriette, the Beguiler

58.7% of decks · synergy 0.56

Eriette, the Beguiler wins by keeping Auras on board long enough to drain opponents out, and Curator's Ward turns her into a hexproof engine piece that also replaces itself when the removal finally lands.

02
Bruna, Light of Alabaster

Bruna, Light of Alabaster

38.8% of decks · synergy 0.38

Bruna, Light of Alabaster is the primary target in combat and the card opponents most want to kill; Curator's Ward forces them through hexproof first, and the two-card draw on death means the rebuild is never empty-handed.

03
Zur the Enchanter

Zur the Enchanter

29.5% of decks · synergy 0.27

Zur the Enchanter tutors Curator's Ward directly onto himself, converting a three-mana commander into a hexproof threat that hands back two cards when the inevitable exile or board wipe finally clears him.

04

The Emperor of Palamecia

15.8% of decks · synergy 0.15

The Emperor of Palamecia relies on staying in play to generate value, and Curator's Ward buys the extra turns that engine needs — the legendary clause is never a problem when your commander qualifies on its own.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Curator's Ward is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it earns its slot almost exclusively in Commander. In singleton enchantment-matters builds the card pulls double duty — protection and cantrip — in a way competitive 60-card formats don't reward, because those formats move too fast for a two-mana setup piece that requires a legendary or enchantment target to do anything. In Commander it shines brightest on commanders who are both the engine and the target: protect the piece, draw when it dies, rebuild. Oathbreaker is a natural fit for the same reason — the oathbreaker itself qualifies, so Curator's Ward is never a blank.

Price Context

Current price

$0.37 bulk tier

At $0.37, Curator's Ward is firmly bulk, and there's no pressure argument to buy in volume — it's easy to find and unlikely to spike. The value proposition is purely in the card's function: two mana for hexproof and a built-in two-card draw trigger is well above what this price tier usually delivers in enchantment-matters Commander decks.
