Cast into Darkness turns off a creature's attacking and blocking permanently for two mana — which sounds fine until you realize it leaves the creature on the board, untaps, generates mana, triggers abilities, and can still be sacrificed. Removal that doesn't remove is the worst kind; this is a hard pass outside of very narrow enchantment-synergy builds.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Cast into Darkness sits below the playability floor — the format is full of cheap hard removal like Feed the Swamp and Heartless Act that actually answer a threat rather than inconvenience it. Pauper is the one format where it's worth a second look, since the card pool is narrower and tapping down an evasive beater occasionally matters, but even there it competes poorly with Chainer's Edict and Victim of Night. Across Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, decks have access to better interaction at the same cost or cheaper and Cast into Darkness sees no meaningful play. The enchantment type is theoretically relevant for Auras synergies, but any commander leaning on that axis will find stronger options first.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Cast into Darkness is deep bulk — the price reflects demand, which is nearly zero. It won't rise; stock is plentiful and play rate is negligible, so there's no reason to buy multiples speculatively.
