Caged Sun card art
Caged Sun doubles your mana and pumps your entire team for six mana — that's a game-warping rate that most mono-color decks are happy to pay. Palinchron loops, Imotekh the Stormlord token armies, and generic big-mana strategies all treat it as a staple rather than a flex slot.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Imotekh the Stormlord

Imotekh the Stormlord

55.0% of decks · synergy 0.44

Imotekh the Stormlord runs a mono-black game plan where every spell generates Necron Warriors, and Caged Sun turns those incremental mana advantages into a board-wide anthem that makes the token swarm lethal far sooner than opponents expect.

02
Braids, Conjurer Adept

Braids, Conjurer Adept

51.5% of decks · synergy 0.41

Braids, Conjurer Adept cheats expensive permanents into play for everyone, and Caged Sun gives the blue pilot a decisive mana lead that converts those symmetric triggers into asymmetric dominance.

03
Ashling the Pilgrim

Ashling the Pilgrim

38.1% of decks · synergy 0.30

Ashling the Pilgrim needs to accumulate counters repeatedly, and Caged Sun's mana doubling lets the deck activate and reset Ashling multiple times in a single turn without burning through its entire land base.

04
Omnath, Locus of Mana

Omnath, Locus of Mana

36.3% of decks · synergy 0.29

Omnath, Locus of Mana stores green mana across turns, so Caged Sun effectively doubles the counters Omnath accumulates and translates directly into a larger, faster threat.

05
Avacyn, Angel of Hope

Avacyn, Angel of Hope

30.1% of decks · synergy 0.22

Avacyn, Angel of Hope decks run a high curve of white finishers, and Caged Sun accelerates into those threats a full turn earlier while simultaneously buffing the angel army once it's assembled.

Format Analysis

FormatVerdict
commander

modern
pioneer

vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Caged Sun lives almost exclusively in Commander, where mono-color decks have the luxury of naming a single color and extracting full value from both abilities. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but functionally irrelevant — six mana is a game-ending investment in those formats, and the payoff is too slow to compete with what those formats do at that cost. Oathbreaker is the one other shell where it sees occasional play, again only in mono-color builds chasing the mana-doubling effect. Treat Caged Sun as a Commander card with a universal legality footnote.

Price Context

Current price

$4.07 cheap tier

At $4.07, Caged Sun sits in a comfortable range where it's cheap enough to include without budget justification but expensive enough that it's unlikely to be reprinted into bulk territory overnight. It's a consistent include in a large slice of mono-color Commander builds, which keeps demand stable and the price from cratering.
