Barbarian Outcast is a 3/2 for two mana with a built-in self-sacrifice clause that makes it a liability in most shells — the madness cost on your discard outlet pays off only if you're already running a dedicated discard engine. Without that infrastructure, or a way to donate the problem like Assault Suit, it's a vanilla beater that kills itself.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Barbarian Outcast is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but competitive play has never found a home for it. In Pauper, common-legal madness and discard synergies exist, but Barbarian Outcast's payoff — a 3/2 body — doesn't justify the deckbuilding cost when better common threats are available. In Commander, it occasionally surfaces in madness or Rakdos discard-value builds, though it's strictly a flavor pick rather than an engine piece. Legacy and Vintage have long since moved past any creature that requires this much scaffolding for a 3/2.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Barbarian Outcast is deep bulk — you'll find it in a common box before you'd ever order it. That price is stable for the same reason it's low: demand is effectively zero outside casual collectors chasing old-border aesthetics.
