Assault Formation turns every defender's toughness into its power stat and lets your walls swing — a two-mana enchantment that rewires the combat math for any toughness-matters deck. If you're running The Pride of Hull Clade or Arcades, this is an auto-include, not a consideration.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

The Pride of Hull Clade
The Pride of Hull Clade is the card's natural home — Assault Formation's activated ability pumps toughness across the board, which directly inflates The Pride of Hull Clade's proliferate-on-damage trigger and turns every incremental +0/+1 into a combat threat.

Tadeas, Juniper Ascendant
Tadeas, Juniper Ascendant rewards creatures with high toughness by giving them reach, and Assault Formation converts that same toughness into offensive power, meaning every blocker Tadeas cares about is also a serious attacker.

Arcades, the Strategist
Arcades, the Strategist already makes defenders deal damage equal to toughness, but Assault Formation is the redundant copy that keeps the engine running when Arcades eats removal — 72% inclusion across nearly 22,000 decks confirms it's a pillar, not a luxury.

Felothar the Steadfast
Felothar the Steadfast cares about high-toughness creatures surviving combat, and Assault Formation ensures those same creatures hit hard enough to trade up — it closes the loop between Felothar the Steadfast's defensive identity and actually winning the game.

Betor, Kin to All
Betor, Kin to All generates tokens and rewards going wide, and Assault Formation lets even a board of beefy 0/4 tokens threaten lethal — Betor, Kin to All turns quantity into pressure, and this turns that pressure into real damage.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Assault Formation is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its home is squarely Commander, where dedicated defender and toughness-matters strategies have the critical mass to exploit it. In Modern and Pioneer, the effect is real — Doran-style toughness builds have existed — but the enchantment requires a full deck built around it to justify the slot, and those archetypes are fringe at best. Legacy and Vintage have the card pools for degenerate toughness combos but frankly better things to do at two mana. In Commander, the 100-card singleton format rewards the redundancy Assault Formation provides, and its activated ability to pump a creature's toughness until end of turn gives the card utility even in games where attacking with defenders is situational.

Price Context
Current price
$0.56 bulk tier
At $0.56, Assault Formation is firmly bulk — you'll likely find it in a dollar box before you find it on a singles site. For an enchantment this central to three or four popular archetypes, that price is a gift; it's not going anywhere dramatically, but at under a dollar there's no reason to wait.
