Appa, Loyal Sky Bison
Legendary Creature — Bison Ally
Flying
Whenever Appa enters or attacks, choose one —
• Target creature you control gains flying until end of turn.
• Airbend another target nonland permanent you control. (Exile it. While it's exiled, its owner may cast it for rather than its mana cost.)

Appa, Loyal Sky Bison puts a free land into play every turn it's in the air — that's not incremental value, that's a ramp engine stapled to a 4/4 flying body. Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius unlocks the full absurdity by letting Appa attack without needing to tap, and Avatar Aang decks treat this as a core piece rather than a flex slot.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy
Avatar Aang
Avatar Aang appears in over half the decks that run Appa, Loyal Sky Bison, and the reason is structural: Aang's ability to untap or re-use triggered creatures turns each of Appa's attacks into multiple free land drops. The synergy score of 0.49 is among the highest you'll see on a single card pairing — this isn't a flavor include, it's an engine.

Katara, the Fearless
Katara, the Fearless runs Appa, Loyal Sky Bison in nearly a third of her decks, leveraging the consistent land acceleration to hit her heavier spells ahead of schedule. The pairing rewards an aggressive curve where Appa's flying damage doubles as a clock while the land triggers pull you further ahead on mana.

Fire Lord Zuko
Fire Lord Zuko picks up Appa, Loyal Sky Bison at a 14% clip, mostly as a reliable threat that generates value outside of combat damage. Zuko decks can struggle to sustain tempo after early aggression, and Appa's per-attack land trigger patches that gap without asking for additional setup.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Appa, Loyal Sky Bison is legal across every major constructed format but belongs almost exclusively in Commander, where a repeatable land-per-attack trigger compounds across a long game. In Standard, Pioneer, or Modern, a five-mana 4/4 that requires attacking to generate value is too slow and too easily answered before the engine starts — there's no competitive build that wants this over faster threats. Commander is the format where Appa earns its slot: 40-life games give it time to attack twice or three times before an opponent can profitably answer it, and multiplayer math means at least one player is often tapped out on your turn. Oathbreaker shares enough of the long-game structure to make Appa playable there too, particularly in green-based ramp shells that can protect it.

$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Appa, Loyal Sky Bison is deep bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card that does real work in the right Commander shells. Bulk rares at this price rarely climb unless demand spikes from a breakout deck, so treat it as an easy pickup rather than a spec.
