Ancient Excavation card art
Ancient Excavation draws cards equal to the number of lands you control, then lets you discard cards to put that many lands from your graveyard into play — all at instant speed for four mana. In graveyard-heavy blue-black shells like Sharuum the Hegemon, that draw-then-dump effect does double duty, cycling through your deck while stocking the bin in a single motion.

01
Sharuum the Hegemon

Sharuum the Hegemon

19.3% of decks · synergy 0.18

Sharuum the Hegemon wants artifacts in the graveyard before the recursion loop starts, and Ancient Excavation fills that bin fast while replacing itself — a clean two-for-one setup for the engine.

03
Cormela, Glamour Thief

Cormela, Glamour Thief

10.8% of decks · synergy 0.10

Cormela, Glamour Thief cares about instants and sorceries going to the graveyard, and Ancient Excavation qualifies on both counts while digging toward the combo pieces Cormela wants to flash back.

04
Mimeoplasm, Revered One

Mimeoplasm, Revered One

7.0% of decks · synergy 0.07

Mimeoplasm, Revered One needs a deep, well-stocked graveyard, and Ancient Excavation both dumps high-value creatures from hand and draws into more targets — efficient graveyard prep at instant speed.

Format Analysis

Ancient Excavation is a Commander card through and through — the effect scales with land count, which climbs naturally over a 40-life, 100-card game in a way it never would in a 60-card format. Legacy and Vintage are technically legal homes, but neither has any interest in a four-mana sorcery-speed (or even instant-speed) draw spell that requires a graveyard subtheme to justify the discard clause. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format worth mentioning, where graveyard-focused 60-card builds can occasionally find a use for it. Play Ancient Excavation in Commander, specifically in blue-black or Sultai decks that actively want cards in the graveyard — anywhere else it's just an overcosted Counsel of the Soratami.

Price Context

Current price

$0.67 bulk tier

At $0.67, Ancient Excavation sits firmly in bulk territory, and that price is about right for a narrow four-mana spell that only earns its slot in graveyard-specific Commander builds. It won't climb unless a pushed new commander creates a demand spike, so buy it when you need it and don't sit on copies.
