Aggravated Assault turns any combat-damage-to-mana engine into an infinite-attack loop — pay five mana, untap your creatures, repeat until every opponent is dead. The cost is real: five mana per activation is steep, but a single resolved trigger alongside The Reaver Cleaver or Ozai, the Phoenix King pays for itself immediately and ends the game on the spot.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Ozai, the Phoenix King
Ozai, the Phoenix King generates mana or resources whenever his creatures deal combat damage, and Aggravated Assault converts that payoff into an unbounded attack loop — swing, trigger Ozai, pay for the next activation, never pass the turn.

Redshift, Rocketeer Chief
Redshift, Rocketeer Chief cares about attacking repeatedly and generating value on damage triggers, making Aggravated Assault the cleanest way to turn a single profitable attack into a full-table knockout.

Preston Garvey, Minuteman
Preston Garvey, Minuteman creates tokens on the attack, and Aggravated Assault multiplies every trigger he generates — each additional combat means more tokens entering, which means more attackers for the next combat.

Neheb, the Eternal
Neheb, the Eternal produces red mana after combat equal to the damage dealt to opponents, and Aggravated Assault is his most famous combo partner — one attack into multiple opponents can pay for every subsequent activation until the game is over.

Lightning, Army of One
Lightning, Army of One rewards repeated attacks with escalating damage, and Aggravated Assault delivers exactly that — stack extra combats, stack the triggers, close out the table before anyone untaps.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Aggravated Assault is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and Commander is the format where it actually sees play. In Legacy and Vintage, five mana for a repeatable effect with no immediate board impact is far too slow against the threats those formats present, so it's a theoretical inclusion at best. Commander is the natural home: the longer game gives you time to assemble a mana-generating creature, and the multi-opponent life total means a single unbounded combat loop kills the whole table at once. Oathbreaker is a fringe case — the smaller deck size and faster game can make it viable if your planeswalker generates the mana to loop it.

Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Savage Beating and Moraug, Fury of Akoum both deliver extra combats without the five-mana-per-loop price tag — Moraug in particular can chain attacks for free as long as you're playing lands, making him a budget engine in landfall builds. Neither replaces Aggravated Assault's repeatable, instant-speed activation in a dedicated combo shell, but if the goal is simply more combats rather than an infinite loop, both cost a fraction of the price.
Price Context
Current price
$31.74 premium tier
At $31.74, Aggravated Assault sits firmly in premium enchantment territory — comparable to other high-demand combo pieces that see play across hundreds of Commander archetypes. It has been reprinted before but demand consistently pulls the price back up, so treat it as a card you buy when you need it rather than speculate on.
