Wurmcoil Engine puts six power across two keywords on the board for six mana, and when it dies it replaces itself with two tokens that each carry one of those keywords — removal spells rarely come out ahead on this trade. Shells that can recur or copy it, from Nim Deathmantle loops to Baru, Wurmspeaker tribal buffs, push it from good to backbreaking.

Commanders with the highest synergy

Baru, Wurmspeaker
Baru, Wurmspeaker doubles Wurmcoil Engine's power and toughness and lets you search it up directly — it's the deck that treats Wurmcoil Engine as a marquee piece rather than a utility inclusion.

Feldon of the Third Path
Feldon of the Third Path makes a token copy of Wurmcoil Engine from the graveyard at the end of each combat, turning a single death trigger into a repeatable source of deathtouch and lifelink tokens every turn cycle.

Daretti, Scrap Savant
Daretti, Scrap Savant can reanimate Wurmcoil Engine from the graveyard or filter it into the bin for later, making Wurmcoil Engine a recursive threat that the deck is happy to trade and recur indefinitely.

Aloy, Savior of Meridian
Aloy, Savior of Meridian benefits from high-impact artifacts with diverse keyword suites, and Wurmcoil Engine's combination of deathtouch, lifelink, and death-trigger redundancy slots cleanly into what that shell is doing.

Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant
Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant can cheat Wurmcoil Engine onto the battlefield through its affinity-style cost reduction, making a six-mana artifact accessible several turns ahead of schedule.

In Commander, Wurmcoil Engine is a staple — six mana for a creature this resistant to clean removal is efficient at a singleton table, and the token replacement clause means board wipes and spot removal both tend to leave value behind. In Legacy and Vintage, it sees play primarily in Metalworker and artifact-based prison builds that can deploy it well before turn six, where its life cushion and token production are meaningful in a damage race. Modern has supported it in Tron shells for years, where Urza's lands make six mana trivially available by turn three and Wurmcoil Engine's lifelink stabilizes against aggressive decks before closing the game. It's absent from Pioneer and Standard by legality, and Pauper can't touch it at rare.
