Witty Roastmaster card art
Witty Roastmaster turns every token you make into a drain trigger — one damage and one life per creature entering under your control is quietly devastating at scale. The Locust God and Norin the Wary are the canonical homes because they generate enough enters-the-battlefield events to kill the table without ever attacking.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Norin the Wary

Norin the Wary

86.1% of decks · synergy 0.77

Norin the Wary blinks himself every single turn cycle, and Witty Roastmaster converts each return trigger into a free drain — pair it with token doublers and the table loses life without Norin ever swinging.

02
Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider

85.0% of decks · synergy 0.76

Zurzoth, Chaos Rider hands every opponent a Devil token on their draw step, which means Witty Roastmaster is draining for the Devils entering your side of the board too whenever you exploit that chaos engine.

03
Raphael, Fiendish Savior

Raphael, Fiendish Savior

58.7% of decks · synergy 0.56

Raphael, Fiendish Savior floods the board with Demons, Devils, and Vampires, and Witty Roastmaster taxes opponents for every one of those tokens entering — the lifegain on Raphael's side keeps you alive long enough for the drains to add up.

05
The Locust God

The Locust God

44.8% of decks · synergy 0.42

The Locust God makes an Insect token for every card drawn, and Witty Roastmaster turns that card-draw engine into a direct damage engine running in parallel — wheel effects become lethal combinations instead of pure refueling.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Witty Roastmaster is a Commander card through and through — its power scales directly with the volume of creature tokens hitting the battlefield, a condition 60-card formats almost never meet consistently enough to matter. In Pauper it's technically playable, but common-legal token engines don't fire at the frequency needed to make the drain meaningful, and three mana for a 2/3 body competes poorly with the format's efficiency ceiling. Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, and Vintage have no interest in a three-mana do-nothing until tokens arrive. Commander is the one format where Witty Roastmaster earns its slot, specifically in decks that generate double-digit tokens per turn rather than ones that incidentally create a few.

Price Context

Current price

$0.76 bulk tier

At $0.76, Witty Roastmaster sits in bulk rare territory — cheap enough to throw into any token shell without a second thought. Demand from Norin the Wary and Zurzoth, Chaos Rider lists keeps it from dropping to pure bulk, but don't expect the price to move significantly without a reprint or a breakout new commander.
