Wingmantle Chaplain floods the board with Defender tokens the moment it enters and every time another Defender does, turning a synergy-piece into a threat multiplier. The combo ceiling is real — pair it with Nim Deathmantle and a free-sacrifice outlet and you loop indefinitely — but even without that line it earns its slot in Arcades, the Strategist as a one-card token engine that also draws off the commander.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Arcades, the Strategist
Arcades, the Strategist turns every Defender into a draw trigger and a damage dealer, so Wingmantle Chaplain's token flood translates directly into cards and attackers — it's one of the first cuts you consider when trimming the 99.

Felothar the Steadfast
Felothar the Steadfast cares about creatures entering and dying, and Wingmantle Chaplain generates a fresh Defender token on each of those events, creating the kind of repeated triggers that make Felothar's engine click.
Format Analysis

Commander is by far the most natural home for Wingmantle Chaplain — the token generation scales with a full table's worth of Defender creatures, and the Nim Deathmantle loop is a legitimate win condition rather than a cute corner case. In Modern and Pioneer it's legal but lacks a competitive shell; Defender aggro shells prefer cheaper payoffs, and a four-mana 0/4 that doesn't immediately close a game doesn't clear the bar. Legacy and Vintage give it no meaningful upgrade path either — those formats don't want this effect at any price. Wingmantle Chaplain is a Commander card, full stop.

Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Wingmantle Chaplain is bulk by every definition — easy to pick up in a trade binder or throw into any order as a filler. Given how heavily it's played in Arcades, the Strategist decks, that price is a genuine bargain that's unlikely to climb without a reprint pressure catalyst.
