Wavebreak Hippocamp card art
Wavebreak Hippocamp draws you a card every time you cast a spell on an opponent's turn — a repeatable, on-board engine that costs four mana and zero additional resources to run. The Watcher in the Water builds its entire gameplan around this trigger, but any blue deck that operates in instant speed gets real value here.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
The Watcher in the Water

The Watcher in the Water

64.2% of decks · synergy 0.54

The Watcher in the Water treats Wavebreak Hippocamp as a core engine piece — every flash spell, instant, or activated ability on opponents' turns draws a card and feeds the Kraken's tentacle-growing mechanic simultaneously, making the two cards functionally symbiotic.

02
Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

52.7% of decks · synergy 0.52

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter already incentivizes casting the first spell each turn for free value, and Wavebreak Hippocamp extends that engine to every opponent's turn, effectively doubling the number of draw triggers the deck generates across a full rotation.

03
Alela, Cunning Conqueror

Alela, Cunning Conqueror

53.2% of decks · synergy 0.49

Alela, Cunning Conqueror creates Faerie tokens whenever opponents cast spells, so the deck naturally operates at instant speed to threaten interaction — Wavebreak Hippocamp converts every one of those reactive plays into additional card advantage.

04
Eluge, the Shoreless Sea

Eluge, the Shoreless Sea

59.8% of decks · synergy 0.49

Eluge, the Shoreless Sea runs heavy on noncreature spells that function at instant speed, and Wavebreak Hippocamp rewards that density by turning every counterspell, cantrip, or flash enchantment cast outside your turn into a free draw.

05
Kalamax, the Stormsire

Kalamax, the Stormsire

41.6% of decks · synergy 0.40

Kalamax, the Stormsire copies the first instant cast each turn, which means Wavebreak Hippocamp fires before and after the copy trigger — two draws from one instant is the kind of compounding efficiency Kalamax decks are built to exploit.

Commander is where Wavebreak Hippocamp does its best work — four opponents means four extra turns per rotation, and the card draws accumulate fast in any deck running interaction at instant speed. In competitive EDH it sits below the power threshold, but in mid-power flash and spellslinger builds it's a genuine engine piece. In Modern and Legacy it's theoretically legal but finds no home; four mana for a 2/2 with a conditional draw trigger can't compete in those formats. Pioneer and Oathbreaker are similarly thin markets for it. Play Wavebreak Hippocamp in Commander or not at all.
