Wastescape Battlemage card art
Wastescape Battlemage puts immediate pressure on the board while generating value through Eldrazi synergies — the effect is real, and the cost is low enough to slot it without strain. In Ulalek, Fused Atrocity decks, it isn't a fringe inclusion; it's showing up in over half of all registered lists.

54.6% of decks · synergy 0.51

Ulalek, Fused Atrocity copies spells when you cast Eldrazi, and Wastescape Battlemage is an Eldrazi that triggers that engine while also functioning as a standalone threat — the synergy is mechanical, not incidental, which is why it lands in more than 54% of Ulalek builds.

Wastescape Battlemage is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but Commander is where it actually sees play — the 100-card singleton format rewards flexible creatures that pull double duty, and this card does exactly that in Eldrazi shells. In Legacy and Vintage, the competition at every point on the curve is steep enough that a creature without an immediately game-warping enter-the-battlefield effect rarely makes the cut, and Wastescape Battlemage doesn't clear that bar. Modern is theoretically accessible but the same problem applies — the format moves too fast for value-oriented Eldrazi that don't close games on their own. Commander remains the correct home.
