Vorapede lands as a 5/4 trampler with undying, meaning it costs your opponent two removal spells to actually kill it — and if Hex Parasite is around to strip that +1/+1 counter, it becomes an infinite recursion engine. Grist, the Hunger Tide lists run it specifically for that loop, but even without the combo, a five-mana indestructible-adjacent beater with trample is just a clean rate.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Grist, the Hunger Tide
Grist, the Hunger Tide pairs with Vorapede as the centerpiece of its primary win condition — sacrificing Vorapede to Grist's -2, letting undying return it, then stripping the counter with a free sac outlet creates a loop that mills and drains the table.

Zask, Skittering Swarmlord
Zask, Skittering Swarmlord cares about Insects dying and going to the graveyard, and Vorapede's undying means it triggers that engine twice before it's truly gone — free value without any additional setup.

Otrimi, the Ever-Playful
Otrimi, the Ever-Playful mutates onto creatures you control, and Vorapede's base stats — 5/4 trample plus undying — make it one of the best mutation targets in the color pair, giving the pile built-in resilience against removal.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Vorapede actually lives: the undying trigger is tailor-made for sacrifice synergies, and the format's slower pace gives you time to exploit the recursion loop with Hex Parasite or similar counter-strippers. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but thoroughly outclassed — five mana for a creature that doesn't affect the board immediately is a non-starter in formats that end games on turn two or three. Modern is the same story; Vorapede has no competitive footprint there. Vorapede is a Commander card, full stop, and within that format it's a genuine engine piece in the right shell.

$0.38 bulk tier
At $0.38, Vorapede is deep bulk — you're not paying for its power level, you're just paying shipping. It holds that floor because demand is narrow and supply is not, so don't expect movement in either direction.
